Description

The Kitāb al-Šifāʾ is the largest philosophical encyclopedia of the Islamic world and its great impact on most Islamic intellectuals is evident. Furthermore, the first part of its logic is the key to understanding many of Ibn Sina's ideas. Avicenna, The Healing, Logic: Isagoge, edited by Silvia Di Vincenzo, is commentary of the Kitāb al-Madḫal of Avicenna’s Kitāb al-Šifāʾ and its English translation is attached to the book along with the Arabic text. In the introduction, the editor deals first with the position of the Madḫal in the history of the logic and its background in Aristotle's works, and then with its independent writing by Porphyry and its effect on the subjects of the logic in the periods after the authorship of Porphyry's Isagoge. This part is of great importance in the collection of topics related to the logic. The editor did her work on the basis of 34 manuscripts (among 129 manuscripts) and she described in a detailed report her way of choosing these manuscripts and arranging of the text. She depicts also the genealogy of these manuscripts and reveals their relation to each other. Paying attention to the translation of this book into Latin is also one of the advantages of this book because of the effect that the translation of this part of the healing logic has on the Latin world. This book contains a complete introduction and two valuable appendix: Al-Risāla al-Mūǧaza fī uṣūl al-manṭiq and Iddat masāʾil fī maʿānī kitāb Īsāġūǧī.
